Eric Benet at Chene Park in REVIEW
The Wednesday Night Jazz series at Chene Park in downtown Detroit’s only outdoor, amphitheater, is in full swing for the summer season in Detroit and this past Wednesday, July 27th, Eric Benet was the headliner with Special Guest, local music phenom, Charity Ward! Charity’s show was great as she performed some of her original music, coupled with awesome covers of Stevie Wonder’s, “Higher Ground” and “All I Do”. She also did a great mini-tribute to Prince mixing in a few of the lyrics from “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” into her song, “Pretty”. Ms. Charity represented the city of Detroit fabulously and succeeded in properly warming up the crowd for the headlining act and boy was I ready sitting 6th-row center.
Eric Benet wowed the crowd with his set as he sang his entire face to the floor. He was comfortable and personable dancing with audience members, snatching a photographer’s camera and snapping random pictures of the crowd and pointing at yours truly while singing his hit; “Sometimes I Cry”. The brother gave us spirited live renditions of; “Spiritual Thang”, “Chocolate Legs”, “News for You” and “Spend My Life With You”. Later that evening I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Benet for a picture. I told him how I used to sing his entire first album to my daughter when she was a baby. His reply was, “Damn you started her off RIGHT!” He then asked where my daughter was and I told him right next to him. He looked at her, and said, “This little cutie?” As one of my favorite artists, I encouraged him to keep crooning for us because I play his music on my radio show religiously and that got me an extra special hug from the soul star. The day after, I found myself thinking about all the songs I love that Eric did not perform and it gave me a good idea…put Eric Benet in a slow jam 5 Minute Mix on the next B Cyde show. Therefore, JOIN the JAM this Saturday at 11am to hear more hits from the one and only Eric Benet in the show’s 5 Minute Mix. Until next time People…Peace, LOVE & Smooches!
