Detroit, MI – November 29, 2024 – Residents of Jeffersonian Apartments in Downtown Detroit have been living without running water for nearly three days, a situation that began just before Thanksgiving. The building’s elderly residents, among them a senior couple who spoke with Marc D’Andre, confirmed the dire conditions, adding that many are also enduring the cold without adequate heat.
Past residents have expressed concern about the ongoing decline of living conditions within the complex. Some apartments, which are advertised to prospective tenants, have been swapped for older units that have not seen renovations since the 1970s. This practice raises concerns about transparency and the true state of available accommodations.
Additionally, residents report severe pest and rodent issues, particularly in the laundry rooms, which are allegedly exacerbating unsanitary conditions throughout the building. Residents fear that these problems are contaminating their homes, including those who do not contribute to the issues.
This situation follows a tragic incident last year involving Breonna Clayton, who fell from the 24th-floor balcony after a mental health crisis, prompting scrutiny of the building’s living conditions and management practices.
Residents hope for immediate action from building management to address not only the lack of running water but also the broader issues that have persisted for far too long.
