On Friday night, a fire broke out in an abandoned house on Grixdale Street, just one block east of Van Dyke, causing significant damage to three nearby homes. Firefighters responded promptly, battling the blaze that threatened residential properties in the area.

Fortunately, the fire did not result in any physical injuries, as residents of the occupied home next door—a grandmother and her four grandchildren—managed to escape safely. The grandmother, who remains in shock after the incident, spent the night in her damaged home despite losing half her roof. The upstairs area was severely impacted by fire and water damage.

The family has been left with nothing, as the fire destroyed all of their personal belongings, including their wardrobes. In a conversation with the children’s mother, who is also the grandmother’s daughter, she expressed her gratitude that everyone got out unharmed but shared the intense stress of their sudden loss. Since the incident, the children have been staying with friends and family while their grandmother remains in the house.

Members of the community have already reached out to offer assistance, and the mother has indicated that she is open to suggestions on how best to support the family during this difficult time. Local news outlet 7 Mile Radio, represented by Marc D’Andre, was on-site broadcasting the firefighting efforts live as they unfolded.
