DETROIT – The City of Detroit and the Detroit Pistons are joining forces to celebrate the completion of the refurbishment or rebuilding of 60 neighborhood park basketball courts. This collaborative effort, which took place over the past six years, is a result of a $2.5 million investment made by the Pistons.
The community celebration, scheduled for 1:30 PM today, September 20th, will take place at Howarth Park, located at 6869 E. Nevada. The event will be attended by Mayor Mike Duggan, Arn Tellem, Vice Chairman of Pistons Sports and Entertainment & Board of Directors, Detroit Regional, Greg Kelser, former NBA player and television commentator, and other Pistons representatives and former basketball players.
The Detroit Pistons’ investment in refurbishing the basketball courts was made as a result of a community benefits process initiated by the team when planning the construction of their new Pistons Performance Center. Through conversations with residents, it was revealed that the community desired improved basketball courts in their local parks.
The 60 newly refurbished basketball courts are strategically spread across 44 city parks, ensuring that residents from all city council districts have access to these upgraded recreational facilities. Each court has been repainted with proper basketball court markings and has undergone beautification to enhance the aesthetic value of each park.
The Pistons’ commitment to the community is evident in their dedication to fulfilling the desires of the residents. By investing in these basketball court renovations, the team aims to create safe and enjoyable spaces for Detroiters to engage in physical activity and build community bonds.
The community celebration at Howarth Park will be a time of joy and gratitude as residents gather to witness the fruits of their collaboration with the Detroit Pistons and the City of Detroit. This event serves as a reminder of the positive impact that partnerships between sports organizations and local communities can have on the physical and social wellbeing of the residents.
The Detroit Pistons remain committed to the city and its residents, and they look forward to continuing their efforts to enhance recreational opportunities for all Detroiters. With the completion of these 60 neighborhood park basketball courts, the community can look forward to enjoying improved facilities and fostering a greater sense of community through sports.
