Tragic Shooting in Detroit Leaves Teen Dead and Officer Wounded

Detroit, MI — July 3, 2025 — A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot by police early Thursday evening near Neff Street, close to the intersection of Harper and Morang, following a series of break-ins in the neighborhood.

According to authorities, officers had been monitoring the area due to recent break-in reports. While observing the neighborhood, an officer noticed three males standing outside a building, all wearing masks. The officer approached the group in an effort to prevent further crimes.

During the confrontation, one of the suspects was detained. However, another of the youths produced a 40-caliber firearm and shot the officer in the hand. In response, the officer returned fire, striking and killing the 16-year-old who produced the gun.

The wounded officer was taken to a nearby hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The identities of the deceased and the detained suspect have not been publicly released, pending family notification and further investigation.

The third suspect who age is unknown, remains at large. Police continue their search for the suspect still at large.
