Police Chief Interviews | Westland, Livonia & Royal Oak

We spoke with the Police Chiefs in Royal Oak, Livonia and Westland. Our mission was to find out what tactics were being practiced and implemented to prevent police brutality, racial profiling and injustices. We also wanted to open up a line of communication, between the community and the police departments, through our media outlet and platform. After our discussions with the Chiefs, we observed, out of over 240 officers from 3 police forces, there are only 3 African American officers. There are 79 sworn officers in Royal Oak and 1 of them is African American, 84 officers in Livonia and none of them are African American; Westland has 81 officers and 2 are African American, says their Chiefs. The Police Chief of the Westland department, says there are not many African Americans that want to become police officers. We were greeted by 2 African American police officers, when we arrived for our meeting at the Westland Police Department. All 3 Police Chiefs stated, their departments have had some form of diversity training. The Police Chief from each department (Royal Oak, Livonia, and Westland) seem to be on board with communicating with the public on our platform, via video conference (ex:Zoom); but there is no date set as of yet. We plan to meet with other departments soon, in hopes of getting them on board as well.
